Generate a document from a record
Last updated 26 October 2026.
For anyone who makes documents on a desktop: at the end you have a PDF, a Word file or both, kept as Files on the record.
On a phone, in the Salesforce or Field Service app? See Make a document on a phone.
Before you start
- You have the Document User role (Docable Generate and Docable Runtime Generator Storage), and you can open the record.
- The template is active and shared with you, and an administrator has added the Docable Generate Document panel to the record page.
Steps
-
Open the record the template is about, here the quote FF-Q-0284.
-
In Generate a document, choose the Template. The button reads Getting it ready… for a moment while the template’s questions and signatures load. Wait for it to change.
-
Under Make, tick PDF, Word (DOCX) or both.
-
Under Questions from the template, answer each question. If the template allows more than one Brand Kit, a Brand Kit choice shows the template’s own kit. Pick another of its kits to print this document with it.
-
Leave Read the records on With your access. Leave Keep the files on this record on. Turn it off for temporary files, which are removed after 24 hours.
-
Choose Make PDF and Word, then choose Open on each file.
-
To follow the run, choose Open the generation run, or open the Generation Runs tab. Generation Runs and the Docable Documents panel show the Brand Kit each document used.

The Generation runs tab: every run newest first, with how many documents were made, the mode it read the records in and the Brand Kit choice.
Example
The ForgeFlow quotation, from the quote FF-Q-0284.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Template | The ForgeFlow Branded quotation |
| Make | PDF and Word (DOCX) |
| Issue date | 5 October 2026 |
| Customer reference | HB-CAPEX-0412 |
| Invite acceptance, Include charts | Ticked |
| Deposit rate | Left blank, so no deposit panel prints |
Check it worked
Both files are listed under the record’s Files. The Generation Runs tab shows the run as Made, with 1 of 1 made. Open the Word file, change a line and save it: it is a real Word document.
If it doesn’t work
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The panel says no active template makes documents from this kind of record for you. | A template appears once it is approved, activated and shared with you. |
| A red message names a reason code and a next step. | Do what the next step says, and look the code up in Error and reason codes. Choose Get a support file if it persists. |
| A quick action on an object whose records are feed-tracked opens in the feed publisher. | Use the record-page panel on those records. |
Set up the record page
An administrator adds Docable to a record page once, in Lightning App Builder.
| Component | What it does | Settings |
|---|---|---|
| Docable Generate Document | The Generate a document panel | Title, Documents to offer, Default document, Formats, People can change the formats, Keep the files on the record, People can change where files are kept, Button label, One-click button for a single button that makes the default document, and People can choose the Brand Kit (on by default; off, documents always use the template’s own choice) |
| Docable Documents | The documents Docable made for this record, newest first, wherever they are stored: open, download, make again and details | Title, How many to show (up to 50) and Show only these documents |
| Docable Generate Document (quick action) | The same panel as a quick action on the record, and on a phone | Add it as a Lightning Web Component action, and give it the label people will see. For the Field Service app, see Set up Docable for the Field Service app |
To make documents for the records ticked in a list view, add a list view button that opens a screen Flow with the Docable Generate for Selected Records screen component and the generation action. For a template that allows more than one Brand Kit, the screen offers a Brand Kit choice for the whole run. See Make documents for many records.
